The Portuguese Well (Perigi Portugis) is located at Kampung Pengkalan Samak near Tun Teja’s Mausoleum. However, visitors often skip the well due to its poor publicity.
Portuguese Well was dug by the Portuguese soldiers during their 130 years reign in Melaka. The Portuguese soldiers were stationed here to protect Merlimau from enemy’s attack who came from Muar. Sultan Mahmud Syah fled to Muar after the Portuguese invaded Melaka in 1511. The Portuguese invasion and the fall of the Melaka Sultanate had led to Sultan Mahmud Syah often launched the attack against the Portuguese in order to win back the Melaka state.
